Between 2009 and 2018 when he semi-retired, Graham Shelton of Spanish Number Plates wrote a fortnightly column for the Costa News Group which covers most of the towns and cities of the Mediterranean coastline. Many of these are included in this section of posts having been updated in April 2020. Some cannot be included now because the rules and regulations are constantly changing.

Selling your car

I tell you Graham, I can’t bear to contact the bloke. After all the help and running around I did for him I can’t believe that he would treat me in this way, the bas…d Graham, can you help me please? I bought a Spanish car off a person who I thought was a friend […]

Dodgy cars

We have all read the reports in the press about some dealer or other selling cars with the clocks wound back to show less mileage or kilometres, tsk, tsk, not just in the UK then! Well Trafico are trying to minimise this problem by having the distance covered shown on the registration document when cars […]

Car purchase and taxes

It may be that Spain is the only country to charge taxes on the transfer of ownership of vehicles, but I’m sure that some sharp reader will tell me that they do in the Gambia or New Guinea for example That such taxes exist is a complete shock to most expats when they hear of […]

Widow’s cars

Most of us who have moved to Spain are baby-boomers, born in the post Second World War period when our dads came back from fighting and re-entered married bliss. The war ended over 70 years ago and our generation has been blessed by the lack of global conflict Even those amongst us who came to […]

Transferring ownership

Susan and Philip emailed me with an amazing amount of information gleaned from the web regarding vehicle transfers, some fairly accurate but other sections downright misleading. Having the information is one thing; knowing how to use it quite another. If you don’t know your Justificante from your Hacienda you are in for a frustrating experience […]

Eyes wide shut

The Customer Service Clark at Asda didn’t bat an eyelid whilst those of us in the queue had difficulty holding our stomachs in. A lady customer was brandishing one of those small barbecue trays that are full of coals for instant lighting and disposal after one use. The lid of the tray showed succulent sausages […]

Buying a Spanish car outside of Spain

This subject was covered some months ago, but more and more folks are making enquiries having seen a Spanish registered car back in the UK. It may be that more and more Brits have been going back and taking their cars with them The understandable belief is that returning a Spanish car to its last […]

Buying non Spanish cars

Ever wondered about coincidences or serendipity? Why is it that we suddenly hear from people that we haven’t heard of for a long time and then two or three others phone up within days? Why if we win 5 euros on the lottery, we find a 50-euro note in the gutter. Why do things generally […]

Vehicle history

A live situation that I am dealing with at the moment has reinforced the reason why anyone contemplating buying a Spanish registered vehicle should have a background or history check on the vehicle Coupled with this are the arbitrary decisions made by the authorities here over two cars that had been registered in Spain, then […]
