Between 2009 and 2018 when he semi-retired, Graham Shelton of Spanish Number Plates wrote a fortnightly column for the Costa News Group which covers most of the towns and cities of the Mediterranean coastline. Many of these are included in this section of posts having been updated in April 2020. Some cannot be included now because the rules and regulations are constantly changing.

New year checks

This Christmas and New Year will see me in the UK for a well earned break. Nice place to visit but who would want to live in that climate? The UK weather forecast is for fog, frost and icy roads so I am hoping that my hire car is well equipped with snow chains, de-icing […]

Poetry in motion

Seven years ago my Sat-Nav brought me to my new home in Spain door-to-door without a hitch. Since them it has continued to prove it usefulness as I drive many miles to places before unseen to deliver documents and number plates to my widely dispersed customers. It can take me home from wherever I may […]

Annual reminders

By Graham SheltonAbout this time of the year, those of us who write about motoring matters are prone to offering what we hope is sensible advice about, well motoring. This often runs along the lines of check your oil and water, keep your tyres inflated correctly, ensure that the car is serviced regularly. Even in […]

Mars and Venus at Christmas

Only last week I was again forcibly reminded that men are from Mars and women are from Venus. My wife had just finished baking some wonderful dish or other in the oven (she reads this column!) when she called me to say that she had left the oven on and could I turn it off. […]

Situations Vacant

Reading the Spanish press is often a pleasure. I resist the feeling of smugness in the ability to do this as I am constantly reminded of how many words I don’t yet know, but I get the gist. I have become immune to the amount of reports of corruption within the political elite as it […]

The modern coming

Joseph and Mary had been summoned by the evil dictator to sign on the register at the Town Hall where they were born. They had been on the Padron at their local Town Hall for ages, but were used to dealing with mindless bureaucracy. Joseph had driven their old Ford Escort for many miles and […]

Let’s have a laugh instead

Like many expats I moved to Spain for a less stressful life with certain fringe benefits such as decent weather and less PC. Sometimes I wonder how I ended up dealing daily with the Spanish bureaucracy whose role in life appears to be to turn the simplest of tasks into a battle of wits. A […]

Whatever next?

The recent furore over the changes to the driving licence requirements for ex-pats is about to be massively surpassed by the introduction of the latest batch of decrees. The bar-room lawyers are going to have a field day with their usual brand of misinterpretation, falsehoods and scaremongering These new laws are so far reaching that […]
